PURPOSE, ORIGIN, LONGEVITY
Edgewood is a Catholic, co-educational high school founded in 1881 by the Dominican sisters based in Sinsinawa, WI. The sisters founded and sponsor a number of schools in southern Wisconsin and neighboring states.
MISSION
Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart educates the whole student for a life of learning, service and personal responsibility through a rigorous academic curriculum that embraces the Sinsinawa Dominican values of Truth, Compassion, Justice, Partnership and Community. The result: Edgewood students experience a motivating education in a caring, Catholic community.
CURRICULUM
Curriculum is college preparatory and based in faith and values. EHS offers over 130 courses including Accelerated, Honors and Advanced Placement courses. A full range of subjects is available, including 29 fine arts courses, 18 science courses, 15 courses in three languages, 12 AP courses and more. Two successful programs are available for students with learning challenges.
SCHOOL SIZE AND PARTICIPATION
Current enrollment is approximately 675, which is near optimal. Smaller classes and personal
contact are essential to the Edgewood educational experience. Edgewood has 1 teacher for every
13 students, an average class size of about 20 students, and average students per grade of about 171. Almost all (95%+) of our students participate in at least one (and usually more) co-curricular activity.
FACULTY
EHS has 59 faculty who average over 20 years of teaching experience between them. Three quarters of EHS faculty members hold advanced degrees. Students consistently name our faculty's interesting and excellent instruction and their care for and interest in students as a prized aspect of their Edgewood experience.
WHO ATTENDS?
Enrollment is open to students regardless of educational or religious background. Students come from over 40 middle schools and from as far away as 50 miles to attend EHS, the only full-sized Catholic high school in a multi-county area. Over 40% of EHS students receive over $500,000 annually in financial aid. About one quarter of EHS students are not Catholic. About 11.5% are of minority heritage.
ACCREDITATION, REPUTATION, RESULTS
Edgewood was the first school in Madison recognized as a "School of Excellence" by the U.S. Department of Education, is a member of the National Catholic Education Association, and has been fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools since 1936 and by the Independent Schools Association of the Central States since 2008. In August of 2007,
Madison Magazine assessed all metro area high schools on a variety of objective criteria; the results ranked Edgewood #1. Of freshman, sophomores and juniors, 95% or more return to school here each new school year. Over 95% of EHS graduates go on to further education. Within the body of Edgewood High School alumni are countless professionals, public servants and leaders who enhance the communities in which they live.
