Freshman Interdisciplinary Team (FIT)

FIT is designed to help freshmen develop a sense of belonging  within the Edgewood Community.  Edgewood draws its freshman class from more than 40+ public and private middle schools every year.  This diversity in background has social benefits, but presents some practical academic problems because students enter with various levels of preparation.

Edgewood tries to provide a common experience for all freshmen through the FIT Program.  FIT incorporates themes--community, diversity, change, challenges, choices, and balance--across the curriculum (English, U.S. History, Biology Religious Studies, Computer Literacy, Student Services).  Communications develop between disciplines through projects and team teaching.  Research, grammar, logic, interpretation, critical analysis, essay writing, and debates are the tools used to help freshman acquire skills that will be useful in their academic careers and throughout life.

Another FIT feature is the integration of technology across the curriculum. By using Internet sources and various software programs in their classes, students become familiar with computers as a means of gathering, manipulating, and sharing information.

Group activities include a freshman retreat, guest speakers, Secret Santas, Olympic Games, and field trips.  The FIT schedule allows for flexibility in class length as well as the opportunity for team teaching.  FIT has also resulted in more communication among teachers, counselors, students and their parents.

In their FIT classes, students learn ways to access resources and information through the use of online library databases.  Our school librarian  instructs them how to critically evaluate information and choose appropriate resources for personal and research needs enabling them to be lifelong learners.
