23rd Annual Edgewood in the Community

Wednesday, September 14

The 23rd annual Edgewood High School in the Community day was held Wednesday, September 14.

Students, faculty, staff and parent volunteers traveled on 25 buses to 51 nonprofit organizations for a day of service.

The day is set aside each year during Homecoming week for Edgewood to give back to the community and focus on the mission of EHS:
Encourage social responsibility, commitment to service and improve the quality of life through peace and justice.

The day began at 8:45 a.m. when students gathered on the field to collect their EIC T-shirt, name tag and site materials, and participate in a prayer service before loading buses to more than 50 sites around Dane County.

This was the 23rd annual EIC and we went to 51 sites, a few which were new this year. Some of the things we did:

  • We served as classroom helpers in 18 elementary schools
  • We delivered Meals on wheels to over 20 individuals
  • We helped out at many social service centers like Babies and Beyond, Boys & Girls Club, Catholic Multicultural Center, Community Action Coalition to name a few.
  • e did various cleaning projects and activities with the elderly at 4 senior facilities.
  • We harvested vegetables at 5 local community gardens.
  • We helped out at 4 animal protection and therapy centers
  • We sorted & prepared food for needy individuals at 5 food pantries.
  • We walked along 1 of our beautiful Madison lakes and cleaned the beaches.
  • Lastly, we landscaped, mulched, spread pea gravel, cleared and hauled brush, collected seed from native prairie plants, and removed invasive species from over 13 parks!

Most importantly, 3,000 hours of service was given to our community!

Groups returned to school for a closing ceremony in the Wilke gym, followed by a root beer float social, were given the opportunity to sign a beam that will be a permanent part of the new Alumni Hall, and the powder puff championship game.

Edgewood in the Community captures our Dominican values of service and partnership as we commit time to serving our community. Edgewood students cumulatively serve more than 2,000 hours of community service each year.
