On January 20, 2024, the Edgewood High School hockey community came together to celebrate its 50th season and dedicate its new home for the next 50 years. The new rink in Verona, Wisconsin, was completed with needed funding provided by Edgewood High School and will allow Verona to expand youth hockey and host larger tournaments. Edgewood will get preferred practice time and game scheduling; their own custom locker room, logo and name branding at center ice, on the boards and in the mezzanine; as well as display their championship banners.
Mike Elliott, past EHS President and project manager stated, “After leaving La Bahn Arena and the UW Shell, we wanted to be able to create a true Edgewood ‘home ice’ look and feel. Thanks to generous donations of nearly $1.6 million, we exceeded our expectations. I played on the original team and it is very rewarding to see the level of success this program has achieved.”
The new facility’s coaches’ offices are dedicated to and named for the Rothering family. Steve Rothering coached Edgewood hockey for 44 years and also taught social studies for 41 years.
"Over Edgewood hockey's 50-year history, I have had the privilege of working with hundreds of student athletes," says Steve. "I was honored to coach my own sons and later to coach beside them. We now have a beautiful new rink we call home. It doesn't get any better than this!"
Steve’s son, Pete Rothering ‘96 (right) began coaching the EHS boys hockey team in 1998 and has been head coach since 2004.
"The Edgewood hockey program has been fortunate over the years to have great support from donors, the school and the hockey families," says Pete. "This is another prime example of that. Our new home provides additional ice time, scheduling flexibility, a great look and a place our players and families can be proud of. In addition to the incredible locker room space for varsity and JV, there is space for meetings, video, studying or just gathering with teammates. Thank you to everyone who supported this project!"
Steve’s brothers have also served as assistant coaches: Tim ‘93 for 14 years and Ben ‘98 for nine years. The entire Rothering family has provided the Edgewood High School hockey program nearly 100 years of coaching!
